ANC Medical Abbreviation: Reading Your Neutrophil Number

Labs, tests and scansBlood testOncologyReviewed 30 Oct 2026

The ANC medical abbreviation almost always stands for absolute neutrophil count, the number of neutrophils, a type of white blood cell, in a set amount of blood. Neutrophils are the first cells the body sends to fight bacteria and fungi, so this one number gives the care team a quick sense of how well a person can resist infection.

You will most often find ANC on a lab report that follows a CBC with differential, on a cancer treatment flow sheet, or in a portal message saying a treatment day is on or on hold. In prenatal and global health writing the same letters can mean antenatal care, which is covered further down. This guide explains how the count is worked out, what low numbers are called, and how to read the line in a chart.

At a glance

  • Stands for

    Absolute neutrophil count
  • Other meanings

Antenatal care (pregnancy checkups), mainly in global health and some countries outside the US
  • Comes from

The white cell count and the differential of a CBC
  • Typical adult range

Often about 1,500 to 8,000 cells per microliter; each lab sets its own
  • Written as

ANC, ANCs (plural), abs neut, absolute neutrophils
  • Low count is called

    Neutropenia
  • Do not confuse with

ALC (absolute lymphocyte count) and WBC (total white cells)

What the ANC medical abbreviation measures

White blood cells come in several families, and neutrophils are usually the largest group. A total white count alone does not show how many of them are neutrophils. The differential splits the white cells into types and gives each one as a percent. The absolute count turns that percent back into a real number of cells, which is easier to act on.

Labs often report it in cells per microliter of blood, such as 3,200, or in a shorter form such as 3.2 with units of thousands per microliter or 10 to the 9th power per liter. Both describe the same amount. A note that reads "ANC 3.2" is almost always using the short form.

How the absolute count is worked out

Most analyzers print the result for you, but students are often asked to do it by hand. The usual method multiplies the total white count by the share of mature neutrophils plus band forms, which are slightly younger neutrophils.

WBC5,000 cells per microliterTotal white cells
Segs (segmented neutrophils)55 percentMature neutrophils
Bands5 percentYoung neutrophils
ANC5,000 x 0.60 = 3,000The result

Some labs leave bands out because modern machines do not always count them separately. That small difference is why two reports can show slightly different numbers from the same blood.

Low ANC levels and the word neutropenia

A count below the lower limit of normal is called neutropenia. Many clinicians and cancer treatment guides sort it into rough grades, given here as a general picture only.

  • Mild: about 1,000 to 1,500 cells per microliter
  • Moderate: about 500 to 1,000
  • Severe: under about 500

The lower the count, the higher the chance that an infection takes hold and spreads quickly. Some healthy people, including many of African or Middle Eastern descent, run a little below the usual range with no added risk; this pattern has been called benign ethnic neutropenia. Your lab and your clinician decide what your own number means.

Where ANCs show up in cancer care

Chemotherapy and some other medicines slow the bone marrow, so oncology teams check ANCs before each cycle. A common pattern is a low point, often called the nadir, roughly one to two weeks after treatment, followed by recovery. A treatment day may be delayed if the count has not bounced back.

Portal message: "Your ANC is 900 today, so we will hold Thursday's infusion and recheck labs Monday." Here the ANC is below the level the team wanted before giving the next dose, so they are waiting for the marrow to recover. The cutoff they use is set by the treatment plan.

When the count is very low, units may use neutropenic precautions such as careful hand hygiene and fewer visitors with colds. A fever during this time is treated as urgent, and most cancer centers give patients a number to call right away.

Antenatal care and other uses of ANC

In world health and maternity writing, ANC means antenatal care, the series of checkups during pregnancy. Reports may count visits, as in "four or more ANC visits". In US clinic notes the more common term is prenatal care, so this meaning appears mostly in global or non-US documents.

Context makes it plain. A number with cell units or sitting beside a white count is the neutrophil result. A word like visit, clinic or booking points to pregnancy care. If you still cannot tell, check with the clinician who entered it.

Neutrophil ranges and treatment cutoffs differ between labs and care plans, so the meaning of your own result is best explained by your oncology nurse or doctor.

Frequently asked questions

What does ANC mean on a blood test?

It means absolute neutrophil count. It shows how many neutrophils, the white cells that fight bacteria, are in your blood, and it is worked out from the CBC with differential.

What is a normal ANC?

Many labs list about 1,500 to 8,000 cells per microliter for adults, though ranges vary by lab and age. Some healthy people run a bit lower without problems, so your clinician reads your number against your own history.

Is ANC the same as the white blood cell count?

No. The white count includes every type of white cell, while the ANC counts only neutrophils. A person can have a normal white count but a low ANC if other white cells make up most of the total.

Why is my chemo held when my ANC is low?

Chemotherapy can lower neutrophils further, which raises the risk of a serious infection. Teams often wait until the count recovers to a level set in the treatment plan before the next dose.

What does ANC stand for in pregnancy?

In maternity and global health papers it often means antenatal care, the regular checkups during pregnancy. US notes usually call this prenatal care instead.
