How we write

Each page on Medical Abbreviation List goes through the same steps before it is published.

1. Choosing the term

We cover abbreviations and terms that people really search for, grouped by where they appear: prescriptions, chart notes, diagnoses, lab tests, procedures and credentials. Each term gets one page, so the answer is never split across several.

2. Research

We confirm every expansion, alternative meaning and safety note against official references, such as The Joint Commission do-not-use list, the ISMP list of error-prone abbreviations, and public health and drug-safety agencies. When an abbreviation has several meanings, we list the common ones and say which setting uses each.

3. Drafting

Our editors use AI writing tools to help produce first drafts from a detailed brief and an approved model page. A draft is only a starting point: it goes through automated checks for structure, links and banned wording, then through review by an editor.

4. Review

An editor checks each fact, removes anything that cannot be confirmed, and makes sure the page explains the term without giving personal medical advice. Pages that mention medicines use generic names only.

5. Updates

We revisit pages when guidance changes or a reader reports a problem. The date at the top of each page shows when it was last reviewed. See our editorial policy for how corrections are handled.
