CTX Medical Abbreviation: Four Meanings and How to Tell

Chart notes and nursingSeveral meaningsPregnancyReviewed 30 Oct 2026

The CTX medical abbreviation carries several meanings, and where it appears tells you which one a note intends: in labor and delivery it means contractions, in pharmacy and infection notes it often means the antibiotic ceftriaxone, in cancer and rheumatology care it can mean cyclophosphamide, and on a lab report it can mean C-telopeptide, a bone turnover test.

Because the same three letters can point to two very different medicines, safety groups such as ISMP advise against abbreviating drug names at all. Below, each meaning gets its own section with a sample line, followed by hints for sorting them out.

CTX medical abbreviation in pregnancy and labor

On a labor unit, ctx is short for contractions, the tightening of the uterus that pushes the baby down during labor. Nurses and midwives chart how often contractions come, how long they last and how strong they feel. Timing is measured from the start of one contraction to the start of the next.

Labor note: "G1P0 at 39 wks, ctx q3 min lasting 60 sec, moderate to palpation." A first pregnancy at 39 weeks, with contractions every three minutes, each lasting about a minute, feeling moderately firm to the hand. Here q means every.

Related labor shorthand includes SVE for a sterile vaginal exam and SROM for when the water breaks on its own.

CTX as the antibiotic ceftriaxone

In hospital pharmacy and infection notes, CTX is often used for ceftriaxone, an injectable cephalosporin antibiotic. You may see it in progress notes such as "Started CTX for CAP," meaning ceftriaxone was started for community acquired pneumonia. The abbreviation ABX, antibiotics, often appears nearby.

Some writers use CRO for ceftriaxone instead, and in older literature CTX also stood for cefotaxime, a related antibiotic. That overlap alone is a good reason to spell the name out.

CTX as cyclophosphamide

In oncology, rheumatology and kidney care, CTX can stand for cyclophosphamide, a medicine used in some cancer regimens and for certain severe autoimmune conditions. It may also be written CYC. A note might read "cycle 2 of CTX completed."

Mixing up cyclophosphamide and ceftriaxone would be a serious error, since one is a powerful chemotherapy drug and the other an antibiotic. This is the clearest example of why drug name shorthand is discouraged. Some writers also use CTx with a lower case x to mean chemotherapy in general, adding one more layer of possible confusion.

CTX on a lab report

On a bone health or endocrine lab report, CTX refers to C-terminal telopeptide of type I collagen, often called C-telopeptide. It is a blood marker that rises when bone is being broken down. Doctors may use it alongside a bone mineral density scan to follow how bone turnover changes over time. Results shift with the time of day the sample is drawn, and reference ranges differ from one lab to another.

Safety and the safer written form

ISMP, the Institute for Safe Medication Practices, advises against abbreviating drug names because different drugs can share the same letters. For CTX, the safer form is to write ceftriaxone or cyclophosphamide in full in orders, labels and handoffs. Contractions may still be abbreviated in labor notes, where the meaning is clear from the setting.

If you see CTX in your own paperwork and the meaning is not obvious, your nurse, pharmacist or doctor can tell you which one the writer intended.

Frequently asked questions

What does CTX mean in pregnancy?

What drug is CTX?

It depends on the setting. In infection care it usually means ceftriaxone, an antibiotic, while in cancer or autoimmune care it may mean cyclophosphamide. The full name should be written on orders to avoid mix ups.

What is a CTX blood test?

It measures C-telopeptide, a marker of bone breakdown. It is used in some bone health workups, and reference values vary between labs.

What does ctx q5 min mean?

It means contractions about every five minutes, timed from the start of one to the start of the next.
