The EOB medical abbreviation has two everyday meanings: in therapy and nursing notes it means edge of bed, and on paperwork from a health plan it means explanation of benefits. The two never really overlap, because one lives in a patient's chart and the other arrives in the mail or a member portal.
Edge of bed is the one you will meet in a physical therapy evaluation, an occupational therapy note or a nurse's mobility record, as in "sat EOB for 10 minutes." Explanation of benefits is the statement an insurer sends after a claim to show what was billed and how it was handled. This page covers both, starting with the clinical meaning.

EOB medical abbreviation in physical therapy notes
For therapists and nurses, EOB marks a position: the patient is sitting on the side of the bed, feet down toward the floor, usually without leaning on the head of the bed. It is an important early step after surgery, illness or a long stay in bed, because sitting upright lets the body adjust its blood pressure and balance before standing.
Notes often pair EOB with how much help was needed and how long the person tolerated it. Sitting at the edge with the legs hanging is also called dangling. If the patient feels dizzy, the therapist may record that too, since a drop in blood pressure on sitting up is common after bed rest.
Decoding a mobility line word by word
Therapists write in compressed shorthand, so a single entry can hold five or six facts. The sample below is split into its parts.
| Shorthand | Plain meaning |
|---|---|
| Sup to sit | Moved from lying on the back to sitting |
| EOB | At the edge of the bed |
| min A | With minimal assistance from staff |
| x 5 min | For five minutes |
| SBA | Stand by assist, staff close by but not touching |
| to FWW | Stood up using a front wheeled walker |
Nursing note: "Dangled EOB x 10 min before ambulating, tolerated well." The patient sat on the side of the bed for ten minutes before walking and had no problems.
Where EOB fits in getting a patient moving
Mobility usually progresses in steps, and EOB is near the start. A common sequence is rolling in bed, sitting up, sitting at the edge of the bed, standing, moving to a chair, and then walking. Each step may be recorded with its level of help, from independent through dependent.
After EOB, the next notes often say OOB to chair, meaning out of bed, or give a walking distance. Activity orders such as WBAT, weight bearing as tolerated, set the limits a therapist works within.
EOB on insurance paperwork
Outside the hospital chart, EOB means explanation of benefits. It is a statement from a health plan that lists a claim: who provided the care, the date, the amount billed, what the plan allowed, what it paid, and the portion that may fall to the member. Most statements say near the top that they are not a bill.
Patients often compare an explanation of benefits with the bill from the clinic or hospital. If the two do not match, or a service on the statement looks unfamiliar, the plan's member services line or the provider's billing office can explain it.
How to tell which EOB you are reading
The setting settles it almost every time.
- Edge of bed appears in therapy evaluations, nursing flow sheets and progress notes, next to words like sit, stand, assist, transfer or dizziness.
- Explanation of benefits appears on letters or portal pages from an insurer, near claim numbers, dates of service and amounts.
If you are a student, the clinical meaning is the one to know cold for charting. The nursing shorthand section lists more mobility terms you will see beside it.
Both meanings are described here in broad terms. A therapist or nurse can explain your own activity plan, and your health plan can walk you through any statement it sent.
Frequently asked questions
What does EOB mean in physical therapy?
It means edge of bed. A therapist writes it when the patient sits on the side of the bed with feet toward the floor, often noting how long and how much help was needed.
What does dangle EOB mean?
It means sit at the edge of the bed with the legs hanging down. It is a common step before standing, giving the body time to adjust to being upright.
Is an EOB a bill?
