IOL Medical Abbreviation: Two Meanings, Eye Care and Pregnancy

Surgery and proceduresEye careObstetricsReviewed 30 Oct 2026

The IOL medical abbreviation has two common meanings: intraocular lens in eye care, and induction of labor in pregnancy care. An intraocular lens is the clear artificial lens placed inside the eye during cataract surgery, while induction of labor means starting labor with medicine or other methods before it begins on its own.

The two almost never overlap, so the setting usually settles it at once. An eye clinic note with CE/IOL and visual acuity is about a lens. A labor and delivery note with weeks of pregnancy and cervical exam findings is about induction. This page covers both meanings, with sample lines from each setting.

IOL as intraocular lens in cataract surgery

A cataract is a clouding of the eye's natural lens, which makes vision blurry, dim or glare-filled. In cataract surgery, the surgeon breaks up and removes the cloudy lens, most often with ultrasound in a step called phacoemulsification, and places a folded artificial lens through a tiny opening. The IOL unfolds and sits where the natural lens used to be, usually in the capsule behind the iris, which is why notes may say PCIOL for posterior chamber intraocular lens.

Lenses come in several designs. Monofocal lenses focus at one distance, toric lenses also correct astigmatism, and multifocal or extended depth of focus lenses aim to reduce the need for glasses at more than one distance.

Post-op eye visit: "POD 1 s/p CE/IOL OS, VA 20/40, IOP 14, IOL centered." One day after cataract surgery on the left eye, vision measures 20/40, eye pressure is normal for that clinic, and the new lens sits in the right place.

ISMP includes OD and OS among its error-prone abbreviations, since the two are easily swapped, and many eye clinics therefore write right eye and left eye in full on orders.

IOL medical abbreviation in pregnancy: induction of labor

In obstetrics, IOL means the care team starts labor rather than waiting for it to begin naturally. Common reasons include a pregnancy that goes past the due date, high blood pressure conditions, waters breaking without labor starting, and some concerns about the baby's growth or the mother's health.

Induction often begins with cervical ripening, softening the cervix with a medicine such as misoprostol or dinoprostone or with a small balloon catheter. Oxytocin through an IV may then be used to start or strengthen contractions, and breaking the bag of waters may be part of the plan.

Labor note: "G1P0 at 41w2d, admitted for IOL, cervix 1/50/-2, start cervical ripening." A first pregnancy at 41 weeks and 2 days is admitted for induction. The cervix is 1 centimeter open, half effaced, and the baby sits high in the pelvis, so ripening comes first.

For students charting either meaning

In eye notes, always pair IOL with the eye treated and, when relevant, the lens type and power. In obstetric notes, record the reason for induction, the method and the start time. Delivery shorthand such as NSVD often follows an induction in the same record.

Questions about lens choice after cataract surgery, or about an induction plan, belong with the eye surgeon or the obstetric team; both meanings are covered here only in general.

Frequently asked questions

What does IOL mean after cataract surgery?

It means intraocular lens, the artificial lens placed in the eye to replace the cloudy natural lens. It stays in place and does not need to be cleaned or removed.

What does IOL mean in pregnancy?

In pregnancy care, IOL means induction of labor, starting labor with medicine or other methods instead of waiting for it to begin naturally.

What does CE IOL stand for?

CE/IOL stands for cataract extraction with intraocular lens placement. It is the standard cataract surgery, also written phaco/IOL.

Is IOL the same as IOP?

No. IOL is the intraocular lens, while IOP measures how much pressure the fluid in the eye exerts. Both often appear in the same eye exam note.

Can an intraocular lens wear out?

These lenses are made to last a lifetime. Some people later develop a haze behind the lens, called posterior capsule opacification, which an eye doctor can treat with a laser.
