PE Medical Abbreviation: Pulmonary Embolism, Exam and More

Conditions and diagnosesLungsContext mattersReviewed 30 Oct 2026

The PE medical abbreviation can point to half a dozen different things, and in hospital diagnoses it most often means pulmonary embolism, a blood clot that blocks an artery in the lungs. Just as often, though, PE simply means physical exam, the hands-on part of a doctor's visit, and it can also stand for pleural effusion, preeclampsia or pressure equalization tubes in the ears.

Because one pair of letters covers such different things, the setting and the note's author settle which one applies. A heading that says "PE:" followed by findings like "lungs clear" is an exam. A result that says "no PE" on a CT scan is about a clot. This page lists each meaning in order of use, shows how to tell them apart in real lines, and spends the most time on pulmonary embolism.

Meanings of the PE medical abbreviation by setting

Here are the standard expansions, roughly in order of how often each shows up in records, and where each lives.

PE readings matched to their usual home
ExpansionWhere it is usedWords nearby that give it away
Pulmonary embolismEmergency, hospital medicine, imaging reportsCT results, blood thinners, shortness of breath
Physical examAny clinic or hospital noteA heading followed by body systems and findings
Pleural effusionRadiology, lung careFluid around the lung on X-ray, drainage
PreeclampsiaObstetricsPregnancy, blood pressure, urine protein
Pressure equalization tubesEar, nose and throat careEar infections, children, "PE tubes"
Pulmonary edemaHeart failure notesFluid in the lungs from the heart, diuretics

In urology, PE can also mean premature ejaculation. Each specialty uses its own meaning so often that writers forget others read the note too.

Pulmonary embolism explained

A pulmonary embolism usually starts as a clot in a deep vein of the leg or pelvis, called a deep vein thrombosis. A piece breaks off, travels through the heart and lodges in a lung artery. Blood flow beyond the clot drops, and the heart may strain to push blood through. Together, DVT and PE are grouped as venous thromboembolism, written VTE.

Common signs include sudden shortness of breath, sharp chest pain that worsens with a deep breath, a fast heart rate, cough and sometimes coughing up blood. Risk rises after surgery, long periods without moving, cancer, pregnancy and some hormone medicines. Large clots can cause fainting, very low blood pressure or cardiac arrest, which is why PE is treated as an emergency. Anyone with these sudden symptoms should call 911.

Decoding a PE line in an imaging report

Our example in the summary box reads like many emergency CT results.

Reading a lung clot imaging line
ShorthandMeaning
CTA chestA CT that uses injected dye to outline the lung arteries
acuteA new clot
R lower lobe PEPulmonary embolism in the lower right lung
no RV strainThe right ventricle of the heart does not look overworked
start apixabanBegin a blood thinner, written here as an example only

Two very different lines: "PE: RRR, no murmur, lungs CTAB" is a physical exam, meaning regular heart rhythm and clear lungs. "CTA negative for PE" is an imaging result, meaning no lung clot was found. Same letters, opposite worlds.

How a pulmonary embolism is found and treated

Doctors often begin by estimating the chance of a clot with a scoring tool and a blood test called D-dimer. A normal D-dimer in a low risk person can make PE unlikely. If a clot is still possible, a CT angiogram is the usual test, and a ventilation perfusion scan is an option for some people.

Treatment is mainly a blood thinner, also called an anticoagulant, such as heparin or a DOAC. For large clots causing low blood pressure, teams may use clot-dissolving medicine such as tPA, a catheter procedure or surgery. A very large clot can cause a cardiac arrest with a PEA rhythm. The length and type of treatment are chosen for each person.

Why PE is a risky abbreviation to leave unclear

The Joint Commission does not include PE among its banned abbreviations, but its many meanings make it a frequent source of confusion. The biggest danger is mixing up pulmonary embolism with pulmonary edema: one is treated with blood thinners, the other often with diuretics that remove fluid. Pleural effusion is another lung finding that can be confused in a quick read.

Many hospitals and teachers suggest writing the full term in any diagnosis or handoff where more than one meaning could fit, and keeping PE for the exam heading only where local habit makes that clear. When reading a note, check the section heading and the surrounding words before deciding.

For students and coders working with PE

Coders cannot assign a diagnosis from an ambiguous abbreviation, so a note that says only "PE" in an assessment may be queried. Look for supporting details such as imaging, location, acute or chronic, and whether the right heart is strained. Students should learn the exam meaning early, because "PE" headings appear in nearly every history and physical. Neighboring diagnosis shorthand appears in the overview of condition abbreviations.

This is a general explainer of chart terms. If you see PE in your own record and are not sure which meaning applies, your doctor or nurse can tell you exactly what was written and why.

Frequently asked questions

What does PE mean in medical terms?

PE most often means pulmonary embolism, a blood clot in the lungs, or physical exam, the hands-on part of a visit. It can also mean pleural effusion, preeclampsia or pressure equalization tubes depending on the specialty.

What does PE mean in a doctor's note?

If it is a heading followed by findings such as heart and lung sounds, it means physical exam. If it appears in a diagnosis or imaging result, it usually means pulmonary embolism.

Is a PE the same as a DVT?

No. A DVT forms inside a deep vein, most often in a leg. A PE happens when a clot travels to the lungs. Together they are called VTE.

What are PE tubes?

PE tubes are pressure equalization tubes, tiny tubes placed in the eardrums to drain fluid and reduce ear infections, mostly in children.

What does no PE mean on a CT scan?

It means the scan did not show a pulmonary embolism. The rest of the report may still describe other findings.
