RA Medical Abbreviation: Arthritis, Room Air and Other Meanings

Conditions and diagnosesSeveral meaningsRheumatologyReviewed 30 Oct 2026

The RA medical abbreviation has several meanings, and the two you will meet most are rheumatoid arthritis, a long term autoimmune joint disease, and room air, which means a patient is breathing ordinary air without added oxygen. Cardiology adds a third meaning, the right atrium of the heart, and some notes use RA for right arm.

The surrounding words almost always make it clear. A problem list or a rheumatology note points to arthritis. A vital signs line with an oxygen reading points to room air. An echo or catheter report points to the heart chamber. The sections that follow take each one in turn with real looking chart lines. If you searched for the VSS on RA medical abbreviation used in nursing notes, jump to the room air section, where the phrase is decoded.

RA as rheumatoid arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune condition where the body's defenses target the lining of the joints. It often affects the small joints of the hands and feet on both sides of the body, with pain, swelling and morning stiffness that lasts a long time. Over years it can damage joints and also affect the eyes, lungs and blood vessels.

Notes may add details such as seropositive, meaning blood tests found rheumatoid factor or anti CCP antibodies, or list medicines such as methotrexate or hydroxychloroquine. It is different from OA, osteoarthritis, which is wear related joint damage rather than an immune process.

RA as room air in respiratory notes

Room air simply means the normal air around us, which is about 21 percent oxygen. When a chart says a patient is on RA, it means no extra oxygen is being given by nasal cannula, mask or any other device. Oxygen saturation readings are often paired with it, because a number on room air means something different from the same number on added oxygen.

Nursing note: "VSS on RA, SpO2 97%." This reads as vital signs stable on room air, with an oxygen saturation of 97 percent. It tells the next nurse the patient is breathing comfortably without support. VSS has its own page if you want the full breakdown.

A respiratory therapist might write "weaned to RA" when a patient no longer needs oxygen, which is often a step toward discharge.

RA as the right atrium and right arm

In heart reports RA means the right atrium, the upper chamber on the right side that receives blood returning from the body. An echo might note "RA normal in size" or "RA enlarged", and a catheter report may list an RA pressure. Its partner on the left side is LA, the left atrium.

Less often, RA marks the right arm, for example where a blood pressure was taken or where an IV sits. Many hospitals prefer spelling out right arm, since RA is already busy with other meanings.
