The CMP medical abbreviation stands for comprehensive metabolic panel, a set of 14 blood tests that checks blood sugar, electrolytes, kidney function, liver function and blood proteins from a single tube. It is a staple of yearly checkups, hospital admissions and medicine monitoring.
Think of it as the BMP with a liver and protein section added. In heart care notes, CMP occasionally stands for cardiomyopathy, meaning a weakened or abnormal heart muscle, so context still matters. Below, each of the 14 lines is explained, along with how results are read and what the panel cannot tell you.

The 14 tests in the CMP medical abbreviation
| Group | Tests | What they reflect |
|---|---|---|
| Sugar | Glucose | Blood sugar at the time of the draw |
| Electrolytes | Sodium, potassium, chloride, carbon dioxide (bicarbonate) | Fluid balance, heart and muscle function, acid balance |
| Kidneys | BUN, creatinine | How well the kidneys clear waste |
| Bones and nerves | Calcium | Bone health, nerves, muscles and heart |
| Proteins | Albumin, total protein | Nutrition, liver making proteins, fluid in blood vessels |
| Liver | ALP, ALT, AST, bilirubin | Liver cell irritation, bile flow, breakdown of old red cells |
Most reports also add a calculated GFR from the creatinine and sometimes an albumin to globulin ratio.
How a CMP differs from a BMP
The two panels share their first eight tests. The comprehensive version adds six: albumin, total protein, alkaline phosphatase (ALP), ALT, AST and total bilirubin. Clinicians choose the BMP when they mainly need sugar, salts and kidneys, such as daily checks on a hospital ward. They choose the CMP when they also want a look at the liver and protein levels, as in a yearly physical, before starting certain medicines, or when someone feels unwell without a clear cause. A standalone liver panel, often called LFTs, covers the liver lines in more depth.
Reading a CMP result
A portal comment from a clinician: "CMP reviewed. ALT 68, AST 52, otherwise within normal limits. Recheck in 6 weeks." Two liver enzymes are mildly raised, while the other twelve results are in range. The plan is to repeat the test rather than act on a single value.
Each lab prints its own reference ranges beside the results, and an H or L flag marks anything above or below. By design, about one in twenty healthy people falls just outside any given range, so a lone value slightly out of range is common and often means little on its own. Patterns and trends matter more than single numbers.
What the panel can and cannot tell you
A CMP is a broad screen. It can show dehydration, kidney strain, high blood sugar, liver irritation, low protein or an electrolyte problem from a medicine such as a water pill. It cannot diagnose cancer, measure cholesterol, check thyroid function or count blood cells. Those need separate tests, such as a lipid panel, a TSH or a CBC, which is why lab orders often list several panels together.
CMP as cardiomyopathy in heart notes
In some cardiology and hospital notes, CMP is shorthand for cardiomyopathy, a group of diseases in which the heart muscle becomes enlarged, thick or stiff. A line such as "ischemic CMP, EF 30%" is about heart pumping, not a blood test. Many writers prefer CM or the full word to avoid the clash with the lab panel, and related heart shorthand includes NICM for nonischemic cardiomyopathy and HCM for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.
CMP abbreviation medical tips for students
Students and new medical assistants often memorize the panel as the eight BMP tests plus the six liver and protein tests. Know the shorthand for each line, since results are often charted in a compact grid or a fishbone diagram with the extra values listed beside it. Check the lab test abbreviation guide for related panels.
Flagged values on a metabolic panel make sense only next to your medicines and history, so let the clinician who ordered it explain any flagged values before drawing conclusions.
Frequently asked questions
What is a CMP on a lab order?
It stands for comprehensive metabolic panel. It includes 14 tests that check sugar, electrolytes, kidney function, liver function and blood proteins.
Should I skip food before a CMP?
Sometimes. Fasting for several hours helps interpret the glucose result, and it is often requested when a cholesterol panel is drawn at the same time. Follow the instructions on your order.
Is a CMP the same as a complete blood count?
No. A CMP measures chemicals in the liquid part of the blood, while a CBC counts red cells, white cells and platelets. They are often ordered together.
What is the difference between CMP and BMP?
A BMP has eight tests. A CMP has those same eight plus six more covering the liver and blood proteins.
