LFT Medical Abbreviation: What a Liver Panel Checks

Labs, tests and scansBlood testLiverReviewed 30 Oct 2026

The LFT medical abbreviation stands for liver function tests, a group of blood tests that measure enzymes, bilirubin and proteins linked to the liver. Clinicians nearly always use the plural, LFTs, because it is a panel rather than one single number.

You will find it in admission orders, medication monitoring plans and portal results. Many labs now name the same group a hepatic function panel, and several of its tests are also part of a CMP. This page explains what is in the panel, how to read a result line, what the patterns can suggest, and why the name is a bit of a misnomer.

What the LFT medical abbreviation covers

LFTs are not one test but a bundle. The exact list depends on the lab, but most panels include the items below.

Tests commonly grouped as LFTs
TestWhat it reflects
ALT (alanine aminotransferase)Enzyme released when liver cells are irritated or damaged
AST (aspartate aminotransferase)Similar enzyme, also found in muscle and heart
ALP or alk phos (alkaline phosphatase)Enzyme linked to bile ducts and bone
Total and direct bilirubinYellow pigment the liver clears; high levels cause jaundice
Albumin and total proteinProteins the liver makes

Some panels add GGT, another bile duct enzyme. Clotting tests such as PT and INR are often ordered alongside because the liver makes clotting proteins.

Why the name is slightly misleading

Strictly speaking, ALT and AST measure liver cell injury, and alkaline phosphatase points toward the bile ducts. Only albumin, bilirubin and clotting time reflect what the liver actually does, its function. Some teachers prefer the phrase liver chemistries or liver panel for that reason.

The name has stuck anyway, and you will hear LFTs on every hospital ward. Knowing the difference helps when reading a result: a high ALT with normal albumin and INR suggests irritation, while a low albumin and high INR suggest the liver is not keeping up with its work.

Reading an LFTs result line

In a progress note: "LFTs: ALT 88, AST 64, alk phos 110, T bili 0.9. Mild transaminitis, trend." The two aminotransferases are raised, which is called transaminitis, while alkaline phosphatase and total bilirubin look typical. The plan is to repeat the tests and watch the direction.

Printed ranges beside each value come from your particular lab and may shift with age and sex. As a rough guide, many labs list ALT and AST upper limits somewhere around 30 to 50 units per liter. Mildly high values turn up often and frequently settle on their own. Your clinician looks at the size of the rise, the pattern and the trend.

Patterns clinicians look for

Doctors group abnormal LFTs into patterns. A hepatocellular pattern, mostly high ALT and AST, can come from viral hepatitis, fatty liver, alcohol use, some medicines or poor blood flow. A cholestatic pattern, mostly high alkaline phosphatase and bilirubin, suggests bile flow is blocked, for example by gallstones. A mixed pattern shows both.

Many common medicines can nudge liver enzymes, which is why some prescriptions come with LFT monitoring. Acetaminophen in large amounts, certain cholesterol medicines, some antibiotics and some seizure medicines are examples. The decision about any change belongs to the prescriber.

LFTs medical abbreviation in orders and monitoring

Orders often read "LFTs in AM" or "repeat LFTs in 1 week". Medication monitoring plans may say "baseline LFTs before starting". In the US, many electronic systems list the order as hepatic function panel, so a patient might see that name on the lab slip while the doctor's note says LFTs.

In a metabolic panel, liver values share the page with kidney markers like BUN and creatinine. Other related abbreviations sit together in the hub for lab work and imaging.

LFT versus PFT and the outside meaning

In US charts, LFT is almost always the liver panel. Across Britain, Australia and a few other countries, LFT can also mean lung function tests, the breathing tests that American notes call PFTs. If a note from abroad mentions LFTs alongside spirometry or inhalers, that is the likely meaning.

Liver test numbers make sense only alongside your history, exam and medicines. Your doctor or pharmacist can go over your own results and whether any follow up is planned.

Frequently asked questions

What does LFTs mean on a blood test?

LFTs means liver function tests, a panel that usually includes ALT, AST, alkaline phosphatase, bilirubin, albumin and total protein. It gives a broad picture of liver irritation, bile flow and protein making.

Is LFT the same as a hepatic function panel?

Yes, in most labs. Hepatic function panel is the formal order name, while LFTs is the everyday shorthand clinicians use.

Do I need to fast for LFTs?

Many labs do not require fasting for a liver panel alone, but a cholesterol check ordered at the same visit may call for fasting. Follow the instructions given with your lab order.

What does elevated LFTs mean?

It means one or more values in the liver panel are above the lab's reference range. Causes range from a recent hard workout or a medicine to liver conditions, so your clinician interprets the pattern and may repeat the tests.

Is a CMP the same as LFTs?

Not exactly. A CMP includes most liver tests plus kidney tests, sugar and electrolytes. A dedicated liver panel adds direct bilirubin and focuses on the liver.
