PPV Medical Abbreviation: Three Meanings and How to Spot Each

Surgery and proceduresOphthalmologyNeonatalReviewed 30 Oct 2026

The PPV medical abbreviation has three common meanings: pars plana vitrectomy, a type of eye surgery; positive pressure ventilation, the breathing support given with a bag and mask, often to newborns; and positive predictive value, a measure of how trustworthy a positive test result is. The setting decides which one applies.

An eye surgeon, a delivery room team and a lab or research report can all use these letters. Below is each meaning in plain language, sample lines from real records, and a quick guide to telling them apart.

Once you know where the note came from, the right expansion is usually clear. When a record leaves doubt, ask whoever wrote it.

PPV in eye surgery: pars plana vitrectomy

The inside of the eye is filled with a clear gel called the vitreous. In a vitrectomy, the surgeon removes that gel using tiny instruments passed through the pars plana, Latin for flat part, a safe entry zone in the wall of the eye just behind the colored iris. Removing the gel lets the surgeon reach the retina.

Common reasons include retinal detachment, a macular hole, bleeding inside the eye and scar tissue on the retina. At the end, the eye may be filled with saline, a gas bubble or silicone oil to support the retina while it heals. Eye notes pair PPV with a side marker such as OD for the right eye or OS for the left.

Post surgery instructions: "OD PPV with gas, face down positioning, no air travel until bubble resolves." The right eye had a vitrectomy with a gas bubble, the patient is asked to keep the head in a set position, and flying is avoided because altitude makes the bubble expand. This illustrates wording only.

PPV in newborn care: positive pressure ventilation

In the delivery room, PPV means giving breaths to a baby who is not breathing well on their own. The team uses a bag and mask or a T piece device to push air into the lungs. Under widely taught newborn resuscitation guidelines, PPV is started when a baby is not breathing, is only gasping, or has a heart rate below 100 after the first steps of drying and stimulating. Breaths are usually given at about 40 to 60 per minute.

Adult and pediatric notes also use positive pressure ventilation for breathing machines and masks in general.

Delivery note: "Apneic at birth, PPV for 45 seconds, HR rose above 100, then spontaneous respirations." The newborn received breaths briefly, the heart rate improved and the baby began breathing alone. This shows how the term appears.

PPV in testing: positive predictive value

In lab medicine and research, PPV is the share of people with a positive test result who truly have the condition. A test with a PPV of 90 percent means that 9 of every 10 positive results are correct. It depends heavily on how common the condition is in the group being tested: the rarer the condition, the lower the PPV tends to be, even for a good test.

Its partner is NPV, negative predictive value, the share of negative results that are truly negative. Screening program reports often list both, along with sensitivity and specificity.

Each meaning here is described in general terms. If PPV appears in your own record or test result, the doctor or care team who wrote it can explain what it means for you.

Frequently asked questions

What does PPV mean in eye surgery?

In eye surgery PPV means pars plana vitrectomy. The surgeon removes the gel inside the eye to repair the retina or clear blood or scar tissue.

What does PPV mean for a newborn?

For a newborn PPV means positive pressure ventilation, breaths given with a bag and mask or similar device. It is used when a baby is not breathing well or has a low heart rate after birth.

What is positive predictive value in simple terms?

It is the chance that a positive test result is truly correct. It changes with how common the condition is in the people tested.

Why can't people fly after a vitrectomy with gas?

A gas bubble inside the eye expands at high altitude, which can raise eye pressure dangerously. The eye surgeon says when travel is safe again.
